COLON CANCER TREATMENT

Surgery is the most common form of treatment for colon cancer. Treatments are generally carried out keeping in mind the stage of the disease, but various other factors can also be taken into consideration. Surgery is normally suggested as a primary treatment, if the cancer has not spread to other parts of the body. In some cases, chemotherapy may be recommended as well.
Surgery is sufficient for stage 0 colon cancers as here the cancer has not spread beyond colon’s inner lining. Using a colonoscope, the polyp can be removed. In stage 1 colon cancers, the cancer remains confined within the layers of the colon wall but have not gone outside that. More than one surgery might be required in case the polyp could not be completely removed. Stage 2 colon cancers have not gone up to the lymph nodes yet but have possibly spread beyond the walls of the colon and to the nearby tissue. Chemotherapy might be recommended by your doctor if there are even slight chances of recurring of cancer.

Stage 3 colon cancers have indeed spread to the nearby lymph nodes, but not necessarily to the other body parts. Chemo is also recommended in such cases.
