What Is Breast Cancer?

Breast cancer origins when cells grow out of control in a breast. The cells form a tumor that can often be seen on an x-ray or it can be a lump. The tumor is cancer if the cells can grow into surrounding tissues or spread to distant areas of the body.

Surgery: Surgery can remove the whole breast, called a mastectomy, or to remove just the tumor and tissues around it, called a lumpectomy.
Radiation therapy: This therapy uses high-energy waves to kill cancer cells.
Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy uses drugs to kill cancer cells. As all these medicines can help fight the disease, they also can cause side effects, like nausea, hair loss, early menopause, hot flashes, and fatigue.
Hormone therapy: Hormone therapy uses drugs to prevent hormones, especially estrogen, from fueling the growth of breast cancer cells.
